Raspberry Pi is a tiny credit card-sized computer that is capable of performing basic computing tasks .The UK based manufacturer “The Raspberry Pi” foundation intends it to be a aid in promoting basic computer science in schools , developing regions & many other areas where it is not possible to implement a full-fledged computer system .It has been so designed as to work with limited hardware resources with an added advantage of affordability.

This single-chip computer comes with HDMI & USB/Ethernet ports through which it can be connected with a standard TV screen and a keyboard to convert it into a computer system. In its newer versions the provision of increased ports makes it easier to connect multiple devices like a plug-in Wi-Fi Dongle and external data storage. It is, however, equipped with its own reasonably sized internal storage in the form of a MicroSD card. The basic I/O software NOOBS can be either downloaded from the company website or bought embedded on a MicroSD card.

The Raspberry Pi primarily uses Linux-kernel-based operating systems and is capable of performing many of the tasks that can be performed by a standard computer system like word processing, spreadsheets, gaming & web browsing. The device is specially useful in educational institutions where it is expected to engage children in more programming tasks and could be involved to equip children with better computer skills needed in the future. This could be easily seen as the beginning of a new era in computer learning and teaching. Currently, its popularity in educational institutions is rising where in multiple cases teachers are also being given training regarding its applications. The small size and ease of affordability (US$35) makes it popular to be used in many other areas like in converting a living room/class room TV into a PC and using it as educational & communication aid or a portable home-made media center. Using this small device and appropriate software a standard TV or any other screen can be equipped to be used as an Internet phone, messaging device or a daily scheduler. The uses and applications of this tiny computer system on a chip can be as diverse as it’s users’ requirements like people already using it to automate their tea kettles or cat-feeders.

Even though its contemporary devices are available in the market, Raspberry Pi is the most sold product of its genre according to stats. Raspberry Pi and its accessories are available to be bought online in units or bulk at the company website or from different vendors worldwide offering competitive prices.
